Heads of meat processing enterprises discussed the meat market condition

06 / 10 / 2020

Prominent experts and analysts of the consumer market, top managers and owners of companies from different regions of Russia took part in the 7th Russian Meeting of Owners and Top Executives of Meat Enterprises. It was held in a hybrid format - online and offline - as part of the Agroprodmash 2020international exhibition held at EXPOCENTRE Fairgrounds.

The tone and direction of the discussion was set by the moderator of the meeting, Ekaterina Luchkina, Executive Director of the National Union of Meat Processors. She noted that the new conditions that have emerged in the industry as a result of the pandemic require new approaches to business, to building a strategy for development, growth and recovery from the crisis, and lead to the formation of new cultural habits and behavioral practices. Strategies, built before the coronavirus impact, are becoming irrelevant. But in spite of the changing situation, it is necessary to work and feed the country with delicious useful products of high quality, so it is time to discuss the problems and prospects of the industry and think about the anti-crisis strategy, the expert stressed.

President of the Association of Retail Companies Sergey Belyakov said that the peak drop in retail trade turnover occurred in April this year. For food products in comparable prices compared to the same period in 2019 it was 9.3%. In August, indicators improved, but still remained in the "red line". Pork production decreased by 2.9% compared to July, beef - by 5.7%, poultry - by 0.6%. At the same time since the beginning of the year, meat production as a whole increased by 11.5% compared to the same period in 2019. According to Sergey Belyakov, under the current circumstances, measures are needed to increase consumer demand, in particular, targeted support for the most vulnerable groups.

Andrey Dalnov, Head of the Center of Industry Expertise of the Russian Agricultural Bank, made a detailed analysis of the state and development prospects of the meat market. In particular, he referred to the camp of specialists who, unlike some other colleagues, believe that despite the negative factors, meat consumption in the country is growing. According to the data provided by him, the consumption of industrial meat at the end of the year and taking into account personal subsidiary farms increased by 2%. And this rate of 1-2% is typical for recent years. The main driver of consumption is pork. Consumption of poultry meat remains at the same level and beef consumption is decreasing.

The participants of the meeting focused on the aspects of changing consumer preferences, forecasts of demand recovery in retail chains, HoReCa, "social" food, the impact of export growth on the status and pricing of domestic markets and other important issues of practical importance for industry professionals.
