Russian meat market: forecasts and expectations

10 / 10 / 2019

The National Union of Meat Processors has organised the traditional Russian Conference of Owners and Heads of Meat Processing Factories at the Agroprodmash 2019 exhibition. It was the sixth conference of the kind, and its theme was "Uncertainty was Yesterday. Change in Mentality Pending. Market Redivision Now?!"

The conference chaired by Union Executive Director Yekaterina Luchkina was attended by about 200 delegates from various parts of Russia including officials, businessmen, top managers of industry enterprises, and business owners. Speaking of the situation on the Russian market, First Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federal Assembly's Federation Council Committee for Agrarian and Food Policy and Natural Resources Sergey Lisovsky noted a general decline in consumer demand caused by shrinking incomes.

He mentioned the ongoing diktat of retail chains and the mandatory electronic marking of goods, which will increase costs and prices amongst the problems faced by manufacturers. Sergey Lisovsky urged the Union members to explain, primarily in regions, what electronic marking was and how it differed from electronic veterinarian certificates aimed to fight counterfeit products. In the expert's opinion, the market sees a sweeping trend towards higher additional non-production costs and reducing cost of the product in the final price.

Main trends in the global meat market and their impact on the development of the Russian meat market were highlighted by head of the Cherkizovo analytical centre Andrey Dalnov. He referred to long-term forecasts of the WTO and said that capacity of the global meat market will increase with rising prices for main types of meat. He named the United States, China, and Brazil as the main producers. China also becomes the main market for meat products and may also become a leading buyer of Russian poultry in the future.

The conference also considered the situation in the market of meat raw materials, prospects for meat processing, current trends in pig farming, changes in pork prices, interaction between suppliers and retail chains, and other matters significant to the Union members.
