Professionals discuss dairy industry prospects

The 14th Russian Forum on Innovative Technologies and Equipment in the Dairy Industry has taken place at Expocentre Fairgrounds at the Agroprodmash 2019 international exhibition.

The forum organised by Expocentre AO and the Imperia KVK brought together about 400 representatives of the dairy industry, research centres, industry unions, and manufacturers of dairy products and special-purpose equipment.

During the plenary session, delegates and speakers discussed the deficit of milk, implementation of the Mercury electronic veterinarian certification system, export potential of Russian producers, their support by the government, and challenges and prospects of state regulation and veterinarian control.

The participants were briefed on the current state of Russian retail chains as the main sales channel, as well as on new formats and markets growing on the federal and regional levels.

INFOLine General Director Ivan Fedyakov presented results of the latest research of the Russian consumer and retail market. In his words, Russia saw a 1.7% growth in retail trade turnover in the first half of 2019. Meanwhile, consumption of medium-priced milk went down 20%. Market actors are not happy about the Platon system. Fifty-six percent of Russian major food producers expressed their negative attitude to the system. Lenta, Magnit, and Perekryostok remained top retail chains, while Danone and PepsiCo led in terms of milk processing and supply, the expert said.

The report of Mikhail Mishchenko, General Director of the Dairy News Centre for Dairy Market Studies and industry agency, drew attention of specialists. While overviewing the dairy industry's conditions, he agreed with Ivan Fedyakov and said that milk consumption had been declining both in Russia and in the world in general. Twenty-four percent of the global population has cut on milk consumption, he said. "There is yet another trend: as the population, domestic market and solvent demand are shrinking and taxes are growing in Russia, exports of dairy products become a priority. This is where manufacturers of dairy products can count on government support," he said.

Forum participants also discussed subsidies received by dairy factories from the Russian Ministry of Trade and Industry. The forum's technological session was dedicated to another important aspect of the dairy industry development: innovative solutions for a modern dairy factory. The participants were told about factory optimisation options and package branding.
