28th edition of the International Exhibition for Equipment, Technologies, Raw Materials and Ingredients for the Food Processing Industry

The 28th edition of the International Exhibition for Equipment, Technologies, Raw Materials and Ingredients for the Food Processing Industry – Agroprodmash 2023 – took place at EXPOCENTRE Fairgrounds on 9–13 October 2023. It is Russia’s largest event to demonstrate the latest developments in the processing of agricultural raw materials and food production. This year the exhibition showed strong growth in all its indicators, which confirms positive trends in the Russian food processing industry.

Exhibition space: 66,379 gross sq m (+27% in comparison to last year)

Attendance: 26,014 unique visitors (+30% in comparison to 2022) from 72 countries (the majority of the visitors were representing the food processing industry from 969 Russian cities; the majority of foreign professionals came from Belarus, China and Kazakhstan, a large number of professionals also came from Armenia, India, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkiye and Uzbekistan; according to the registration figures ¾ of the visitors were purchasing decision makers or influencers)

Exhibitors: 861 companies (46.7% higher than last year; 593 are Russian companies, which is +17.4% to 2022, and 268 foreign exhibitors, which is a three-fold plus increase in comparison to 2022)

Types of products on display: 25 product sectors displayed food and beverage equipment, packaging and filling, refrigeration, storage, measuring and control, weighing equipment, ingredients, automation and robotics solutions, food safety, sanitation and hygiene, components, recipes and technologies, R&D, solutions for construction and reconstruction of food industry facilities, recycling and disposal of waste

Agroprodmash 2023 fully met the demands of the industry representatives. Companies demonstrated equipment for all sectors of the food and processing industry, presented new technological solutions and ingredients, held direct negotiations with potential customers, found new partners and concluded favourable contracts for the coming year.

“This year Agroprodmash brought together participants from 20 countries. It has become a mirror of the main trends and the current situation in the food production market. This year the show attracted 861 companies, which is 46.7% more than last year. The majority of them – 593 exhibitors – were Russian companies. The significant participation of Russian companies reflects the import substitution strategy and clearly demonstrates that over the past two years Russian producers have managed to replace most of the manufacturers that left the market.”

A format of regional group stands and pavilions has proven itself to be a great solution for business and economic development in the Russian regions. This year it has maintained positive dynamics as the number of stands and pavilions has increased again compared to previous year.

For many years, leading Russian manufacturers have been trying to reduce dependence on imports for major components by investing in their own production. The participants in Agroprodmash 2023 noted a significant increase in interest in domestic developments.

25 product sectors presented the whole technological cycle of production from ingredients and equipment for processing raw materials to finished products, packaging and cooling. Considerable attention was paid to automation and robotisation of production.

This year all sectors have expanded their floor space, and some changed their location. For example, packaging equipment and materials returned to Pavilion No.1, where the sector was located before the pandemic. Confectionery and bakery equipment was located in Pavilion Forum for the first time. An extensive and diverse showcase of ingredients occupied two pavilions – No.3 and No.7. Equipment for production of dairy products, beverages, bottling, fruit and vegetable processing was accommodated in Pavilion No.8.

Meat processing equipment kept its traditional location in Pavilion No.2. APM MeatTech and APM PoultryTech brought together 115 companies that presented both Russian developments and foreign brands, including those from Austria, Belarus, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Turkiye and the USA. A wide range of equipment was demonstrated by the first-time participating companies from China.

The theme of casings was developed further. The show presented the latest developments in natural and artificial casings, bags, nets and other materials with high performance characteristics for sausage production.

One of the key sectors was APM Packaging, which presented over 120 exhibitors from 9 countries. The salon demonstrated equipment, materials and current packaging solutions for all sectors of the food industry: meat, dairy, bakery, confectionery, beverage, snack, fruit and vegetable processing.

Over 400 brands from the world's leading manufacturers were presented at APM Ingredients. Participants included exhibitors from 8 countries and brands from 16 countries, including European and North American. There were also new companies, including Chinese ones.

More than 110 companies from 7 countries took part in APM Bakery, APM SweetTech and APM GrainTech. Russian companies presented a full range of bakery equipment and machines for confectionery shops.

APM Automation Solutions has doubled in size compared to last year. More than 50 participants, both Russian and foreign companies, presented their solutions in the field of robotisation, production automation and software.

This year's APM Food Hygiene has broken all records in terms of floor space, which has almost tripled. The number of exhibitors reached 50 companies.

Pavilion No.8 attracted a lot of attention with APM FruitMash, APM DairyTech, APM Bottling, APM DrinkMash, APM IceCreamTech and APM Complect. A large number of premieres, both new equipment and new companies, awaited the visitors. APM DairyTech and APM Bottling exceeded the 2019 level in terms of exhibition space with 95 exhibitors from 8 countries.

APM Refrigeration presented new refrigeration equipment, the latest units and industrial products for equipping and maintenance of refrigeration and climate systems.

Agroprodmash 2023 reaffirmed its role as a key event for the industry, providing a platform to showcase innovations, share experiences and strengthen business ties both domestically and internationally.

Conference programme

The events of the Agroprodmash 2023 conference programme were dedicated to the most relevant issues of further development of the Russian food machine building and the ways of further strengthening the food security of Russia.

The programme was opened with the 8th Russian Forum on Strategic Challenges of Agribusiness: High-Tech Approaches, Automation, Innovative Equipment and Ingredients, organised by EXPOCENTRE AO and KVK Imperia Forum. The forum delegates discussed the work of the food processing industry under sanctions, as well as the problems of robotisation and automation of food production.

Participants of the Focus Session on Robots and Automation in Food Production: From Autonomous Packaging Systems to Smart Robotisation of Warehouse Management. Challenges and Possible Solutions spoke about the use of robots in the agriculture industry and food processing companies.

Experts spoke about the development of the dairy industry, the latest technological developments for milk processing and dairy products production at the 18th Russian Forum on Innovative Technologies and Equipment in the Dairy Industry.

More than 15 market experts, top managers of large production facilities discussed important problems of the bakery industry at the 8th Russian Forum on Bakery and Confectionery Industry “Bread Business”. The forum participants offered forecasts of the bakery and confectionery market, discussed technical equipment of production in the conditions of import substitution, talked about available imported equipment and domestic analogues, and raised HR issues.

On the first day of the exhibition, the delegation of Altai Krai made a presentation of Altai region highlighting the region's investment potential: investment projects and proposals in the agriculture industry, tourism, chemical and textile industry, and production of export-oriented products. As a result of the event, negotiations were held with the heads of interested companies on the implementation of projects in agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing industries.

Another important event was the Conference on Robots in the Food Industry, organised by the Russian Association of Robotics (RAR) together with EXPOCENTRE and supported by the Food Policy Committee of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. The participants said that the food industry was among the three most robotised enterprises and industries. In addition to ready-made solutions presented at Agroprodmash 2023, there are increasing opportunities to support systemic modernisation of production lines with the help of additional preferential financing terms, subsidies, and grants. They also talked about the training of professionals, measures to support human resources, and current automation trends in the Russian food industry.

The participants in the Panel Discussion on Poultry and Egg Processing. Success via Effective Solutions: Practical Approach, Scientific Innovations, Legal Regulations discussed the issues of poultry products processing, its competitiveness, safety and innovative development of enterprises in the industry. The event was organised by the Russian Poultry Research and Technology Institute and EXPOCENTRE AO. Its scientific partner was Russian Research Institute of Poultry Processing Industry, which is a branch of Russian Poultry Research and Technology Institute.

Specialists of Gorbatov Federal Research Center for Food Systems of the Russian Academy of Sciences together with EXPOCENTRE AO held a packed three-day series of events to discuss the most relevant issues of the changing food industry market and new points of growth for businesses.  

One of the main events was the 13th International Meat Congress: Relevant Issues of the Meat Industry. Its speakers drew the attention of the audience to microbiological control of food products, methods of detecting residues of undeclared ingredients, innovative approaches to the production of meat products for children, new trends in products for the so called warm shelf, and comparative qualities of products from different types of meat and poultry.

The Show of the Best Professional Meat Boners brought together professionals of meat processing enterprises.

The confectionery industry was discussed during the Panel on Modern Approaches to the Development and Preservation of Confectionery Products in the Conditions of Import Substitution and the Masterclass on Making Fruit Jelly. Today, fruit jelly leads the sugary confectionery segment in terms of popularity, second only to chocolate.

The sphere of alternative products was covered by the Masterclass on Production of Functional Baked Goods Based on Ento-Protein. It was dedicated to the issues of safety of insect protein use as a food product and conditions of insect cultivation, as well as storage conditions and shelf life of finished products with the use of alternative protein sources.  

The Masterclass on Fruit and Vegetable Processing raised questions about modern technologies and equipment for the production of juice products, packaging, control methods and detection of adulteration.

Rossoyuzkholodprom – the Russian Union of Refrigeration Enterprises and EXPOCENTRE AO in partnership with the Refrigeration Industry web portal (Business Marketing OOO) organised the 5th Conference on the Refrigeration Industry: Effective Solutions for the Food and Food Processing Industry. Leading refrigeration companies shared their knowledge and experience on how to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of refrigeration equipment, considered issues of selection and operation of refrigeration equipment, as well as examples of successful cases at industrial refrigeration facilities: food production, warehouses, and shops with centralised refrigeration systems. The conference hosted a presentation of departmental awards of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade to representatives of Rossoyuzkholodprom member enterprises, as well as the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Union and the Eurasian Investment Agency.

The 3rd Congress on the Agriculture Industry Digitalisation was organised by K2Tech OOO. Industry experts talked about digital trends for the food and processing industry and shared examples from the practice of building a digital foundation and experience in creating a digital division at enterprises in the industry. The participants got acquainted with market analytical data, as well as digital trends in the industry, issues of stop factors and mistakes in business digitalisation.

The 7th Forum on Food Processing Machinery 2023, organised by the Rosspetsmash Association and the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade, was a platform for constructive dialogue between representatives of industry business and authorities. The speakers discussed issues of state support for food processing machinery manufacturers, shared their assessments of the state of the industry and expressed their opinions on the necessary measures to ensure the industry’s further sustainable growth.

The Food Ingredients Producers Union and EXPOCENTRE AO organised the Practicum on Food Ingredients: Normative Regulation of Use and Circulation. Amendments No.2 to TR TS 029/2012, which generated a lot of attention among industry professionals. The event brought together more than 120 participants: representatives of both manufacturers and suppliers of ingredients, and producers of food products of various industry categories.

The event’s speakers were representatives of the Eurasian Economic Commission, the Technical Committee for Standardisation TC/ICT 154 on Food Additives, Flavourings and Edible Salt, the Federal Research Centre of Nutrition, Biotechnology and Food Safety, Gorbatov Federal Research Center for Food Systems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Food Ingredients Producers Union, the Centre for Standardisation, Metrology and Testing in Moscow and the Moscow Region, and Rostest-Moscow.

President at the Food Ingredients Producers Union Tatiana Savenkova opened the event talking about the main milestones of the normative legal acts and also gave a retrospective of eight years of work on the Amendments No.2 to TR TS 029/2012, which had been adopted by the Decision of the EEC Council No.84 of 29 August 2023 and would come into force on 27 February 2024.

The workshop was the first public event dedicated to the review of comprehensive changes to the main industry document of the food ingredients industry – Technical Regulation TC 029/2012 on the Safety of Food Additives, Flavourings and Processing Aids.

All exhibition days featured masterclasses of Russian State Research Institute of Baking Industry devoted to the technological specifics of production of artisan bread, gluten-free products, products for children, ways to reduce production costs, leavening, brewing, cold fermentation, and labelling of finished products.

During the five days, the Employment Centre organised more than 60 consultations on the recruitment of specialists, managers and line staff were held. Forty-eight companies from among the exhibitors and visitors placed vacancies. This year, job seekers were particularly interested in higher remuneration and comfortable working conditions.

The industry traditionally has a high demand for technologists and sales managers for ingredients and equipment. According to the results of the Employment Centre's work, for the first time there was a record demand for line staff (pickers, handymen, special equipment drivers, skilled workers), which is needed by 80% of employers who applied to the Centre.

Counselling centres for food systems, baking industry, ingredients and refrigeration technology were open on all exhibition days.

The 29th edition of the International Exhibition for Equipment, Technologies, Raw Materials and Ingredients for the Food Processing Industry – Agroprodmash 2024 – will take place at EXPOCENTRE Fairgrounds, Moscow, Russia, from 7 through 11 October 2024.
