Vegetable processing in the spotlight of traditional conference at Agroprodmash 2019

08 / 10 / 2019

The 6th conference on the Latest Technologies and Equipment for Fruit and Vegetable Processing was held within the Agroprodmash 2019 accompanying program. The conference was organised by Expocentre AO and co-organised by FruitNews media partner.

This year the conference is focused on vegetable processing. Thought leaders spoke about the place of vegetable processing in the food market, prospects of their export and sales in Russia, and about modern technologies of vegetable processing.

The overview of the processed vegetable market was given by the conference moderator, General Director of FruitNews Information Agency Irina Koziy. She provided statistics of the Federal State Statistic Service on consumption and production of processed vegetable products. Thus, consumption of dried vegetables turned out to be extremely insignificant and did not exceed 14 thousand tonnes per year, i.e., less than 100 g for every Russian citizen.

The speaker also pointed out to a steady trend in reduction of canned products. In 2017-2018 the reduction was about 1.5 million tonnes per year or 10-10.5 kg per person. The reverse situation is on frozen fruit and vegetables. In 2018 the growth in consumption amounted to 28%. Every year about 800 thousand tonnes are consumed; 60% of them account for vegetables. It is 5.4 kg per person.

According to the expert opinion, the juice market is the largest in volume but the most challenging. Here the share of vegetables is still insignificant, but judging by the number of the newest products, there are prospects for its growth.

Irina Koziy emphasised a significant increase in the production of frozen goods as well as potato processing. She paid attention to the farm growth for all kinds of vegetables in the primary sector.

CEO of VVS Zhanna Martynova told about export and import performance of fruit and vegetables and pointed out vegetable baby food, chips, and potato products as the most promising for export.

Presentations of experts – representatives of TOMRA, CFT, Fergusto, Farm Garlic, the Russian Union of Juice Producers, and others – were devoted to the global novelties in vegetable processing, advanced sorting technology, vegetable processing and conservation, construction of vegetable processing lines, production of vegetable ingredients, vegetable juices, and other topics.
